Where to start when writing your website content

1. Start with a plan

Before you start writing, take some time to think about what you want your website to achieve. Having a clear purpose will help you decide what information to include and how to communicate it.

Define your website's objectives
What do you want your website to do for your business? You might want to attract new clients, generate enquiries, showcase your work, build credibility or encourage people to book a service.

Your objectives will influence the content you need and the actions you want visitors to take.

Know your target audience
Think about the people you want to reach. What are they looking for? What questions might they have? What would help them feel confident about choosing your business?

Understanding your audience helps you write content that speaks to their needs rather than simply describing what you do.

Consider how you'll measure success
Think about what success would look like for your website. This might be an increase in enquiries, more consultation bookings, greater awareness of your services or more visitors viewing your portfolio.

Having a few clear objectives gives you something to work towards and helps you assess whether your website is doing its job.

2. Plan your website pages

Once you've established your objectives and audience, you can start thinking about the pages you'll need.

Most small business websites include Home, About, Services and Contact pages, but the right structure depends on your business and what your visitors need to know.

Keep your navigation simple and use familiar page names so visitors can find their way around easily. You don't need to include every possible page. Focus on the information that will help your audience understand your business and take the next step.

3. Use your homepage as a starting point

Your homepage is often the first impression visitors have of your business. It should quickly communicate what you do, who you help and why someone might choose you.

Consider including a clear headline, a brief introduction to your business, an overview of your main services and a way for visitors to learn more or get in touch.

Keep the content focused. Your homepage should introduce your business and guide visitors to the information they need, rather than trying to tell your entire story.

4. Write with your audience in mind

As you begin drafting your content, focus on what matters to your readers. Explain how your products or services can help them, use language they understand and avoid unnecessary jargon.

Keep paragraphs relatively short, use descriptive headings and break up longer sections to make your content easier to scan.

Your writing should also reflect your brand's personality and tone of voice, helping create a consistent experience across your website.

5. Don't aim for perfection straight away

Writing website content can feel daunting, especially when you're trying to get every word right. Start by getting your ideas down, even if they're rough. You can refine the wording and structure later.

It can also help to think about the questions customers regularly ask you. Your answers can provide a useful starting point for content that addresses their needs.

Remember that your website content and design work together. Having your content prepared before the design process begins helps inform the layout, structure and overall user experience.

Bringing it all together

Writing your website content doesn't have to be overwhelming. Start with a clear plan, keep your audience in mind and focus on communicating what matters most. Your content plays an important role in shaping your website's structure and design, helping create an experience that works for both your business and your visitors.
