Understanding the file types in my brand design package

When you receive your final brand package, you’ll notice a range of different file types included. Each format has its own purpose, and knowing when to use which file helps you keep your brand looking sharp, professional, and consistent — whether you’re sharing a logo with your printer, uploading it to your website, or using it in Canva.

Below is a simple breakdown of the most common file types you’ll receive in your brand package and how to use them with confidence.

JPG

JPGs are versatile files used for both print and online. They are especially well-suited for photos and offer efficient compression, reducing file size for faster loading times online. However, JPG compression can reduce image quality, so lower-resolution JPGs are not ideal for print or for previewing at larger sizes.

PNG

PNGs are widely used online, supporting transparency, which makes them ideal for logos and graphics that need to be placed over backgrounds. PNGs are lossless, meaning they retain full image quality during compression. This makes them a great choice for digital use, where clarity is important.

SVG

SVGs are commonly used online and are not pixel-based, allowing them to be scaled to any size without losing quality. This format is ideal for logos and graphics that need to look sharp across various devices and screen sizes. SVGs can also be uploaded to design tools like Canva, where colours can be easily modified.

EPS

EPS files are vector-based and intended for print. They can be scaled to any size without losing quality, making them suitable for high-resolution print work. As a universal file type, EPS is widely compatible with different design programs, supporting CMYK colour and transparency for versatile design use.

If you’re ever unsure which file type to use, please don’t worry, you’re not expected to be the expert. I’m always happy to point you in the right direction so your brand is presented at its best across print and digital.
